We continued our sermon series titled “Perishing in the Promised Land” and we heard a powerful word on Putting God First!
We are reminded throughout scripture to put God first.
Joshua 23:6-9 tells us to hold fast to God alone. Joshua 24:19 also tells us that our God is a jealous God. In Exodus 34 we learn that our God’s name is Jealous; he is a jealous God.
The jealousy that comes from God is not competitive jealousy like that of the world, it is protective jealousy. God is not jealous OF us, he is jealous FOR us.
God wants to be first in our hearts, he hates to share His throne(Isaiah 42:8); He is the Alpha and Omega (Rev. 1:8). The bible says that we are to seek God first!! Whether we put God first or not doesn’t change His position as First but it changes the blessing on our lives.
How we put God first is to:
1. Live by the Spirit – Romans 5:5 tells us that the Holy Spirit pours out God’s love in our hearts and he enables us to seek God and put Him first.
2. Say no to the world – 1John 2 tells us that if we love the world the love of the Father is not in us. We are called to love the people in the world but not to love the world because that keeps us from putting God first.
3. Set your priorities right – Luke 10 tells us the story of Martha and Mary. Martha was busy serving Jesus and Mary was listening to Jesus. Mary was distracted by many things and didn’t put God first.
Join us next Sunday to hear what the Lord has to say to us!
