Today’s sermon, “Triumphant Over Death”, was a continuation of our sermon series “We Are More Than Conquerors”. We were reminded that, our entire life as believers is hinged on one truth – Jesus triumphed over death! He triumphed so that we don’t have to be afraid of death, because we know that we will be with him in eternity, and also so that we can live in victory over the trials that we face in the world.Matthew 9:18-19 and 23-25 is the story of a ruler who comes to Jesus for help because his daughter has died, and highlights 3 truths that are necessary for us to apply when we face dead situations in our lives:
1. Put the noise out and bring the Word in – when Jesus entered the house of the ruler, the scripture says he saw flute players and a noisy crowd and He told them, “Go away. The girl is not dead but asleep”. When we stand in the face of hopeless situations, like Jesus, we need to silence the noise and chaos of the enemy that comes to attack our minds and speak the Word of God into our circumstances. It is not enough to rebuke the devil; we must stand on the Word of God because its has the power to break every rock in our lives (Jeremiah 23:29).
2. Press on in spite of opposition – the scripture says in Matthew 9:23 that when Jesus told them the girl was not dead but asleep, “they laughed at Him”. Jesus was laughed at because he spoke contrary to the situation in front of Him. And we will receive opposition too if we chose to say what God says regardless of what we face. Nehemiah experienced opposition when he set out to build the wall of Jerusalem (Nehemiah 4). But he remained focused and continued to build in spite of opposition.
3. Surround yourself with like-minded people – if we are to walk in victory over the challenges and dead situations in our lives, we must surround ourselves with like-minded people. We must seek God to give us people who we will walk alongside us to help us accomplish what God has set before us. Proverbs 27:17 says “as iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another”. We need to have in our inner circle, people who will sharpen us and help us walk in faith. As Aaron and Hur held up the hands of Moses, so also we need to surround ourselves with like-minded people who will hold up our hands to help us win battles.
God has called us more than conquerors! And Jesus triumphed over death so that we can live victorious!!
