Yesterday, Pastor Gaby started a new 7 part sermon series based on Jesus’ seven “I Am” statements.
“I Am the Bread of Life” is the title of yesterday’s message. Moses asked God how he should introduce Him if asked by the children of Israel and God said, “tell them I Am has sent you” (Exodus 3:13-14). God is the Great I Am, He is all in all, He has no beginning and no end! John 8:58 tells us Jesus said, “Before Abraham was born, I Am”! He establishes His identity before the people.
In the account of John 6:35,48 and 51, we see Jesus revealing Himself to the people as the “Bread of Life”. Jesus said, if we eat of Him, we will never hunger; we will live forever. We were encouraged with 3 truths about Jesus, the Bread of Life:
He is the God who nourishes – Matthew 4:4 tells us about Jesus’ response to the devil. “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds from the mouth of God”.
We take good care of our physical bodies, we eat well and make sure we keep our bodies nourished. Sadly, our spirit man is malnourished. We are not eating the right food to empower us as believers. We are putting all kinds of rubbish in our spirits and the result is that when we are faced with challenges, we are unable to weather the storms. Jesus is the Bread of Life, He is the Living Word, and we must eat the Word of God and have the fill that will equip and empower us.
2. He is the God who satisfies – when we are in Christ, only then will we be truly satisfied. In the world, we try everything; sex, alcohol, drugs, food, caffeine and the list goes on, but we never attain satisfaction. We are spirit and we can only be truly and completely satisfied when we are in Christ, when we eat of his Word and His Presence. John 6:26-27 tells us not to labour for food that spoils but for that which endures to eternal life. If we seek Him, like the crowd in John 6, for the wrong reasons we will never be satisfied.
Jesus desires that we seek Him for Him and not for the things He can give us.
3. He is the God who strengthens – We need strength in this world. Life is full of trials and we need strength to face the storms and challenges of this life. Isaiah 40:29 tells us He gives strength to the weak and weary! He empowers us spiritually. An angel of the Lord fed Elijah and strengthened him for the journey ahead (1 Kings 19:5).
Today the Lord wants you to feast on the Bread of Life who is Jesus Christ! He is all in all and He is all we need!
