The title of today’s sermon was “I Am The Light Of The World” declared by Jesus in John 8:12 and He went on to say, “whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness, but will have the Light of life”.

The Lord led the Israelites out of the desert as a pillar of fire by night and they celebrated the feast of the Tabernacle by lighting up the temple; Jesus stepped up in the Temple and declared that He is the Light of the world!

Why do we need Jesus, the Light of the world?

1. So that we don’t stumble – Psalm 119:105 says,”Your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path”. Meaning that Jesus is one step ahead lighting up our path. Many believers are living in darkness, they stumble because they are not living in the light and allowing Jesus to lead their lives. But if we have Jesus we don’t have to stumble (we are not confused) because we are in the Light (1 John 1:7). In 1 John 1:5, there is no darkness at all in Jesus! If you need to know what step to take, seek Jesus and He will be your light that illuminates your path.

2. So that we can be a light – Luke 8:16 tells us that no one lights a lamp and puts it under a bushel but sets it high for it to be seen. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven (Matthew 5:16). Jesus wants to shine His light through us before others in this dark world. He is therefore looking for those who are available.
Many of us have had our lights off for so long; we have grown cold. If you are living in darkness, its because you are not plugged in to Jesus.

3. So that we can grow – Just as we need the sun, plants and other organisms also need the sun to survive and grow. We need the Light of Jesus to grow spiritually. If we want to grow, we need to be in the light. We can’t grow if we try to do it without Jesus. We need the light of His glory to grow and become who God has called us to be.

Jesus is the Light of the world… come to Him and you will live in the Light!
